Oops, I Did it Again!

I'm up at 5:30 every week day for school.  When my alarm goes off, no matter what time of year, it's black outside, and all is quiet.  I tip-toe around the house, shower and eat breakfast before leaving around 6:30.  I get to school by 7 and have about half an hour to get myself settled in, make copies, set up my projector for power points or prepare my supplies for the day.  At 7:25 the first bell rings and the kids start coming in.

So imagine my complete panic when I slowly began to wake up on Friday morning to the sound of birds chirping and the first morning light creeping through our shades.

I thought, "I love Saturday..."

And about .02 seconds later I thought, "Oh my god, it's not Saturday!"

My eyes snapped open, I grabbed at my phone (which serves as my alarm clock) and it was dead. DEAD.  Charging all night, but somehow dead!  I hopped out of bed and ran to the clock which read: 7:28am.

SEVEN TWENTY-EIGHT A.M.!

As in, three minutes after the first bell of the school day.

So yeah, my morning was not all that different from this:

I could practically hear John William's score as I zipped from the bedroom to the bathroom, took the fastest shower of my life, threw on some clothes and left the house.  No time for makeup.  No time for drying my hair.  No time for breakfast. (Usually a big no, no for me, but there was no time!)

Luckily the school schedule gods were smiling upon me as Friday was a "Day 3" at school.  (Gotta love the rotating drop schedule!)  This year I have a prep during period 3. Phew!  I got to school in record time- by 8:10! I still had about 20 minutes to calm myself down and prepare for my class coming in at 8:28.

How did this happen?  I still don't know.  This situation has happened to me only once before, during my first year of teaching.  I set my alarm on my cell phone (this was two phones ago) and for whatever reason, it just didn't go off!  I ran around all crazy and got to school just a few minutes into the first period, but ever since then I've been crazy O.C.D. about checking the alarm on my phone at night.  No joke, I'll check it anywhere from 3-5 times before falling asleep.  Indy makes fun of me saying, "You need to relax! You're going to accidentally turn it off if you keep checking it so much!"

I know, I know, I know I had the alarm set on Thursday night.  My phone was in it's charging cradle, charging up a storm, and yet when I woke up late for school, it was dead!

I think the battery is just fried.  When I got to school, a few times the phone decided to turn itself off and then on again randomly.  Since Friday I haven't had an issue, but ever the planner, I ran out this weekend and got myself a back-up alarm:

I got it at Target for about $25.00.  It's simple and small (which is great, because there's not much room on my night stand!) and it comes with these neat slips of paper you can draw on and slide into the plastic perimeter to give it some pizazz. Also, it's perfect, because when my Zune died a few months ago I had to give in and get an ipod.  Since having it I never purchased any sort of ipod doc.  Now, I can listen to my ipod while doing the dishes or cleaning the apartment or doing some art work without the pesky headphones that get hooked on everything and keep falling out of my ears.

So yeah.  Here's to hoping I never have a Home Alone moment ever again!  It shouldn't happen.  Unless, of course, both my phone and my new alarm clock fail.

In which case, I just give up at life.

  1. A couple of years ago I bought a FABULOUS warm clock, that projects the time in huge red numbers on the ceiling. Since my eyesight is so bad w/out my glasses that I can't see the face of the clock, this is the best! If you wake up to a strange noise at 3am, you KNOW it is 3am!

But here's my waking up story: I've always been a nightowl; mornings aren't really my thing. In my young single days, in a different town and different teaching job, I carpooled with an elderly gentleman who didn't know what to make of me and my single lifestyle (actually, I did ALL the driving, as he was ancient with bad eyesight). Our school was undergoing construction, and as a result we were on a crazy split schedule where school STARTED at 7am! I lived about 20 minutes away. One morning, I woke in a panic - oh no! I overslept! Raced into the shower and called Earl, at 6:30am, to tell him I was on my way. He promptly responded that, um, it was SATURDAY morning; what had I been up to on Friday night?

I did the same thing another time, in midwinter, I had come home from school and taken a nap (here's why I NEVER take naps) and fallen into a deep sleep. When I woke up and saw it was 6:15, I thought I had overslept my alarm and I panicked and again called Earl. But it was only 6:15 PM, not AM, and I had been asleep for a couple of hours. I don't know why he trusted me to drive...

I didn't mean to leave comment this long, but you dredged up a fun memory!

    1. Your second story happened to my student teacher this year! I was at home, enjoying some t.v. after dinner and got a panicked text saying, "I am so sorry! I'm leaving my house right now!"

I wrote back, "What's wrong? What happened?"

He wrote back, "I can't believe I slept in! I'll be at school as soon as I can."

I wrote back, "We had school already. It's 7:30...at night."

He went home, took a longer than intended nap, and woke up in a panic! I felt so bad, but I definitely got a big laugh out of it!

  2. Oh no! Thank goodness it worked out for you!
Twice this fall I turned off my alarm or slept through it or something. I only overslept by an hour, though. I got up, showered and got both my kids up and all of us out the door in 20 minutes. I don't know what usually takes us so long! I've also done the panic "I'm late!" when it was really the middle of the night.

    1. I was wondering that, too- what usually takes me so long if I can spring into action so quickly and still arrive at school within a reasonable amount of time!?

  3. Other people, those who don't teach for instance, have NO IDEA how earth shattering it is for a teacher to oversleep. They couldn't possibly know the sick panic we feel when we realize that children will show up to the art room and WE WON'T BE THERE!!!!! ARRRGGHHH! We've all done it, most of us arriving to find out that the earth did not stop revolving because we didn't show up on time, just that we had to do the walk of shame past the front office while others (punctual people, eh....) gave us the sidelong glance that says, Glad it was you and not me!!

  4. Such an entertaining post. I've not overslept in the morning, but have paniced after a late afternoon nap.

    1. At least with the afternoon nap mix-up, after freaking out, you can go back to napping!
